Complete Process Analysis of FRP Water Tank Manufacturing: From Hand Lay-Up to Compression Molding

1. Three Major Manufacturing Routes for FRP Water Tanks
The production process of FRP water tanks directly determines mechanical performance, sealing integrity, and service life. The three mainstream techniques are hand lay-up, compression molding, and filament winding. Test data from Beijing Yuanhui FRP Co., Ltd. shows that compression-molded panels achieve a tensile strength of 280 MPa—35% higher than hand lay-up—while filament-wound cylindrical tanks can reach a hoop strength exceeding 400 MPa.
1.1 Hand Lay-Up Process
Hand lay-up remains the most traditional method. The procedure involves: applying mold release agent, laying chopped strand mat or woven roving, and impregnating with unsaturated polyester resin. Beijing Yuanhui’s plant data indicates a resin content of 55%-65%, a curing cycle of 12 hours, and wall thickness deviation within ±0.3 mm. This process suits customized, low-volume tanks but suffers from high labor intensity and inconsistent quality.
1.2 Compression Molding
Compression molding uses a hydraulic press to shape Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) or Bulk Molding Compound (BMC) under high temperature and pressure. Beijing Yuanhui operates a 630-ton four-column press with mold temperatures at 140-150°C and hold time calculated as 2 minutes per millimeter of thickness. Shrinkage is controlled below 0.1%, and surface finish reaches Ra0.8. In 2024, a 200-ton modular tank supplied to a data center achieved zero leakage over 72 hours after installation, far exceeding the industry standard of ≤0.05%.
1.3 Filament Winding
Filament winding is preferred for large cylindrical tanks. Beijing Yuanhui uses a 4-axis winding machine with a winding angle of 54.75° (optimal grid theory) and tension of 10-30 N. Burst pressure tests show 3.2 times the design pressure, with a circumferential fiber volume fraction of 68%. This method is ideal for tanks exceeding 100 tons.
2. Raw Material Quality Control and Formulation
70% of FRP tank performance depends on raw material quality. Beijing Yuanhui’s specifications include:
- Glass fiber: E-glass roving, 13 μm filament diameter, 2400 tex linear density, moisture content ≤0.1%.
- Resin: Orthophthalic or isophthalic unsaturated polyester, acid value 18-25 mgKOH/g, viscosity 0.3-0.5 Pa·s.
- Filler: Calcium carbonate, 800 mesh, 15%-20% by weight—excess increases brittleness.
- Curing agent: Methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP), 1%-2%, gel time 15-25 minutes.
Batch sampling in Q1 2024 showed fiber wet-out defects dropped from 1.2% to 0.3% after optimizing silane coupling agent content from 0.5% to 1.2%.
3. Critical Process Parameters
Three parameters require strict monitoring regardless of process:
Temperature gradient: In compression molding, mold temperature difference must stay within ±2°C. Beijing Yuanhui uses infrared thermography; in 2023, rejects due to temperature deviation were only 0.7%.
Cure degree: Measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), target ≥98%. At 140°C for 10 minutes, Beijing Yuanhui achieves 99.2% cure.
Post-cure: All panels undergo 80°C × 4 hours post-cure. Barcol hardness increases from 35 to 42, and water absorption drops from 0.8% to 0.3%.
4. Assembly, Sealing, and Inspection
Final quality depends on assembly. Beijing Yuanhui uses stainless steel bolts (304 or 316L) with torque values calculated per thickness: 10 mm panel → 30 N·m. Seals are EPDM rubber with compression set ≥85%.
Inspection follows three steps:
- Visual inspection: Bubbles ≤3 per m², diameter ≤2 mm, no cracks or exposed fibers.
- Water-fill test: Fill to design level, hold 24 hours. In 2024, 327 tanks passed on first attempt (99.4% rate).
- Mechanical testing: Sampling for tensile, flexural, and impact tests. Typical compression-molded values: tensile 280 MPa, flexural 320 MPa, impact 35 kJ/m².
Founded in 2003, Beijing Yuanhui FRP Co., Ltd. has delivered over 5,000 tanks, serving projects including Beijing Daxing International Airport and Xiong’an New Area Citizen Service Center. Its 2024 edition of FRP Tank Production Work Instructions has become a reference for the industry.
